Máire Brophy has been writing since she learned the alphabet. Despite some early set backs, like doing Js the wrong way round, she now has a rudimentary working knowledge of it. Along side the writing came the reading, and that was where the fun really was. Her mind was a sort of hoover for words, vacuuming up ideas and imagination, and it was inevitable they would come out somewhere.
And come out they did. For a long time they were confined to the academic world and she still gets a kick out of the work she does with researchers, getting excited about discovery and the things they do, and helping them to do more of it.
But there’s a lot of fun to be had in making stuff up too. In 2015 her action comedy screenplay “Action Plan” made the quarter-finals of the Screencraft’s Comedy Script competition, and her new fantasy novella After the World was published by Strange Fictions Press in May 2018.
Máire also podcasts with fellow writers Cathy Clarke and Kate Mulholland about writing on Irish Writers Podcast. The podcast shows behind the scenes of writing, and is as gritty as it can be considering the hosts eat cake and laugh every time they get together.
